I would like to thank and express my utmost gratitude to our Prime Minister, Dato’ Sri Haji Mohammad Najib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak for this foreword in my book entitled “Communicating Science, Trust and Integrity for Societal Wellbeing”

PRIME MINISTER OF MALAYSIA

FOREWORD

As the world around us has changed, so too has Malaysia. Indeed, today, we find ourselves at a major crossroads. At stake is the question of how we engage with the rest of the world while ensuring our continued progress and development.

We can continue along the path of an export-oriented, low-cost manufacturing economic model, or one that is driven by creativity and innovation that will open new doors for us and elevate our economy to industrialized nation status.

Already, considerable progress has been made towards this through the National Transformation Programme (NTP) introduced in 2010. Now, with a view to the future, we have embarked on a new policy –National Transformation 2050 (TN50).

This is the results of a series of conversations, in which more than a million young people from across Malaysia were engaged, detailing their aspirations for our homeland in the year 2050. We heard them, and are now committed to using the views they shared as a beacon of light, to guide our future policies.

In order to achieve this vision, we must streamline our efforts in the fields of science, technology and innovation. To that end, the National Science Council was established in 2015  to provide strategic direction and coordination across the entire ecosystem.

As the Chairman of the Council, I realise that to successfully nurture a scientific society, we must first bring on board the policymakers and the broader community impacted by this, ensuring that they are engaged with the government’s initiatives as well as the opportunities and challenges that will present themselves.

Madius, a friend of mine since the early 1990s when he was active in the political arena in Sabah, has played a critical role in this. As Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, he has led the efforts and communications around these activities, through his weekly columns now compiled in this excellent book.

His passion for the subject matter is clear and this collection of essays captures not only his genuine enthusiasm for the fields of science, technology and innovation but also outlines his sound rationale on why it is so important that we continue to pursue our development in these areas.

I have no doubt that his writings will be a source of inspiration for many generations of future scientists and innovators to come.

Dato Sri Mohd. Najib

My book will be launching tomorrow (12th December 2017) during the Malaysia Commercialisation Year (MCY) Summit 2017 event held in Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
